We will start this lesson on web site promotion
from the beginning - ‘How to find a niche market.’
It can be daunting and hard to really know where to go and what
to go into when choosing a market. But it’s important to
get it right so that your web site promotion efforts are not in
vain.

There are so many factors to take into account and it can
be like piecing a jigsaw puzzle. For example, how much search
volume could you expect? How much competition is there for
that market? Where do you find suppliers that are reliable
and cost effective? These are just a few questions you have
to ask yourself when choosing a market place. |
We will show you a couple of tools you can use to pick your niche
market. So here we go. Brainstorm 10 ideas. Write them down on
a piece of paper.
Now go to Overture
Search Tool and select the keyword selector tool.
Now type your first idea into the search box. For example if you
chose web site promotion, then type web site promotion
into the search box.
Have a look at how many searches and how deep the search is.
If you have many levels down that have high searches than you
may have a good market. In our example using web site promotion,
the search volume starts off high, but tapers down quite quickly
below 1,000 searches. It may not be the best market to go into.
Overture really only gives us an idea of search volume, nothing
more. We use another tool to decide what keywords we will target
for the niche market.
Please repeat the process for the remaining 9 ideas. Choose the
top three that show the best combination of search volume and
search depth. Remember the depth is how many different keywords
are searched on before the numbers drop down below 1,000.
A good search volume for your top keyword is between 10,000 and
30,000. Any higher and the market may be too competitive and far
too hard to break into. Any lower and the market is too small
to bother with.
Next, go to word
tracker and use their free trial. If you can afford
it, buying there paid version for a day is value for money at
around $8.27. Its so much better than the free trial in selecting
your keywords for your web site promotion campaign.
Once you have logged into word tracker enter your best idea from
the top 3. take a look at the search terms and the search volume.
Do the same for the remaining 2 ideas. Based on what you see with
the search terms and search volume, make a spreadsheet with the
terms for each idea. This spreadsheet will contain all the keywords
and search volume for each idea.
This may take you some time, but its well worth it for your web
site promotion efforts. Plus you will have it to refer to later.
As word tracker will only be available to you for a day if you
select the paid one-day version.
Next you need to analyze the competition. Choose the best keyword,
i.e. the highest search volume keyword from the first of the top
3 ideas. For example if mine was web site promotion, then I would
take this term and do a Google search with it. Then I would go
to the bottom and click on the website that appears in the number
10 position on Google. This is the website you have to beat to
get to the first page on Google.
Now to see how hard it is. Go to www.marketleap.com and select
the link popularity link. Enter the website that cam up in the
number 10 position on Google into the search box in marketleap.
Enter the verification code. This will get a list of back links
from MSN Google and Yahoo that this website has acquired over
the time.
Now note how many links they have. That’s the number you
have to beat to get to first page on Google. Do the same for the
other 2 ideas. Now take a look at what one you think is the easiest
to rank. One with 500 back links will be a piece of cake compared
to one with 50,000 back links. Choose your battles wisely.
