BANNER EXCHANGES

What are Banner Exchange Networks™?
Usually, a banner exchange works like this: You
find a Banner Exchange you like, and you register with it. You
send them your banner and "cut 'n past" their little
snippet of HTML into your page. Then, you start earning "credits".
Normally, you get one credit for every time one of their banners
is displayed on your page.
Usually, for every two times you display their banner, your banner
is displayed on someone else's site. This is what is called the
"ratio". Some exchanges have 3:1 ratios, some 10:7,
some even 1:1. This is also known as a banner trade.
These banner exchanges get you free banner advertising. They
provide you with stats to show how many exposures your banner
has had and how many click throughs your banner has received.
Also, the really good exchanges also offer targeting. That way
your banner that is advertising a hosting site won't show up on
a page about health, and vice versa. It usualy helps to increase
the click-through ratio.
How effective are they?
Well, a common CTR (Click Through Ratio: Means the ratio of how
many times your banner is displayed to how many times it's clicked
on) is somewhere around 40:1. That means, if the exchange service
has an exchange ratio of 2:1, you would have to display their
banner 80 times to get one user to your web page.
Banner Exchanges are used more for branding
than for visitor conversion and traffic. You need to be able to
display hundreds of thousands of impressions to be able to get
reasonable traffic to your site. However, the cost per impression
is usually very cheap, and like I said, they are good for name
branding. Although someone may not click on the banner, if they
see it enough, the image or brand becomes imprinted on their minds.
They may just visit later, when they need your service, by typing
your url or brand name into a browser.
Banner exchanges or trades can also be
used to display rich media. This is known as banner rich media
and can include such technology as flash to make your presentation
